No Description A Sherborne Graphic Artist has won the competition to design a logo for the new Sherborne
Community Arts Centre (SCAC), to be built adjacent to Paddock Garden. Andrew Purnell, who attended the Gryphon School before moving on to art college, submitted two “splatter” designs, shown at the top of this Press Release.
SCAC Trustees liked the informal, modern and distinctive concept of a paint splash, representing the primary purpose of the Arts Centre as a place where people of all ages will learn and practise the visual and graphic arts.
Andrew is in the process of moving from Sherborne to Cornwall where he is setting up a studio to pursue his career in design and the creative media. His work can be sampled on his web-site at: www.andpurnell.com

Andrew describes his background as follows: “Growing up in the rolling hills of Dorset I spent my younger years reading comics, watching cartoons and doodling on important documents.
When I grew taller I popped over to Wales and spent three years with the folks at Cardiff School of Art and Design, learning all things nice about good design. Since then I’ve been working for various folk from around the world as well as spending two years working in
Cardiff as Creative Design Manager before deciding to pack a bag and explore the world for a year.”

About winning the competition Andrew said: “I am thrilled that my design has been chosen, growing up in Sherborne and taking a huge interest in the arts I couldn’t think of anything better!”
Andrew receives a cheque for £200, a sum donated by Sherborne Town Council.
The logo competition was also open to present school students and a design has been chosen as runner-up to Andrew. This was submitted by Molly Whitaker, a 12 year old student at Sherborne School for Girls. Molly submitted a similar “splatter” design on a canvas standing on an artist’s easel.
SCAC Trustees have decided to hold this design for future use when targeting young people to participate in Arts Centre events. Molly receives a cash prize donated by the Trustees.
The Trustees warmly commend those who submitted designs and congratulate the winner and runner-up. The Trustees believe that the talent shown by the winning entrants is a credit to the schools of Sherborne.
